Abstract

Clinical observation was done on 41 patients with Pott¢¥ s paraplegia in children from Jan. 1965 to Aug. 1972. All cases were treated with conservative treatment. Three cases who did not respond to more than six months of conservative treatment, were decompressed by costotransversectomy. The results thus obtained are summarized as follows:
1. In almost all cases, degree of kyphosis was deteriorated. In the majority of cases, beginning of deterioration of kyphosis started within three months after beginning of chemotherapy. In no case was there further deterioration of kyphosis after 12 months.
2. Back pain was relieved completely within 3 months after starting chemotherapy in almost all cases.
3. The majority of these cases of Pott¢¥s paraplegia recovered with conservative treatment without enforced limitation of activity, but the duration of recovery from the paraplegia was longer than that observed by others employing also one of the recommended surgical procedures.
4. Paravertebral abscess shadow in roentgenogram subsided very slowly, and did not disappear com¡©pletely in some cases despite of recovery from paraplegia and the cessation of chemotherapy.
